                                          Suzie Greenberg

I'll say it again--What a show! Landady was flawless, and blew my roomates
away(whose first Phish show it was). Llama and Foam kept things rockin'.
Guelah was really funky, and the guys were all dancin' around to the groove.
Sparkle was really cool, and the end jam on 'Laughing laughing fall apart,"
was done in insane triple time--far faster than I've ever heard it before.
I liked Maze a lot--this was the first time I heard it. The harmonics are
really cool. I Didn't Know featured great a capella work(as usual) and a
short but crazy vaccuum solo by Fishman. The Sloth, Runaway Jim, and Cavern
all rocked. The end jam on Runaway Jim was so long that I was sure the set
was over; I was pleasantly suprised by Cavern. A great set, but the second
set would even top it.
At the start of the second set, Mike came out sans the hat and jacket
he had worn for most of the first set, and his hair rose up six or so inches
above his head, with various pigtails sticking out in all directions. They
started with a hot Golgi, followed by a nice bouncy Uncle Penn. Then the
true and utter madness began. Tweezer was soooooo intense, with the never-
ending jam and the crazy strobe lights. As they wound Tweezer down, Mike and
Trey tried to lead the crowd in clapping along to the intro to Mound. Nobody
got it right. This song is going to take some getting used to. The
synchopated rythms and changes were very hard to follow. This song worked
though, because it kept the mood weird enough. YEM was crazy. They brought out the trampolines, and Trey and Mike had a good old time bouncin The vocal
jam out of the end featured themes of "Suck Your(F@#kin')Finger" and then
the hilarious classic-rock anthem "Hey Kids Rock and Roll, Rock On". Fishman
then brought out the bagpipes and squealed on those for a while. While he
was putting them away, Mike started playing filler music that resembled
BBFCFM. Trey looked up, shrugged his shoulders, and as soon as Fishman
returned, they started it up proper. This was craziness heretofore unseen
by these eyes. They paused for a moment to jam on the Wizrd of Oz theme, and
at the end of it, Trey pulled off Mike's wig that he'd been wearing! They
finished the song, and the crowd just erupted. Squirming Coil was up next,
and was quite a contrast to the madness we'd just witnessed. Page's solo at
the end was beautiful, though. Another new tune followed, I don't remeber it
too well, so I won't comment. Chalkdust was super-hot, furiously fast(I'm
running out of adjectives for great:-), and definitely a crowd pleaser(hit
single?). Weigh was next. It was very nutty, but I definitely like it.
Craklin' Rose was simply HILARIOUS! I thought my side was going to split.
Fishman was great. My roomate was amazed by how good Bouncin' sounded even
after they'd been playing for so long. He was right--very, very nice.
The expected Tweezer reprise closed the show nicely. Sleeping Monkey was
really funny too--a friend was sure it was Free Bird when it started. Oh
Kee Pa--> Suzie Greenberg was the highlight for many people that I talked to
after the show. To top it all off, I got to talk to Page for a while after the
show. He was extremely cool, and it was the perfect ending to a near-perfect
show. I can't wait for the show in Chicago!!!!
Later,
