Baby Gramps is a conundrum, an enigma, a riddle that would out-sphinx the Sphinx itself. That said, Baby Gramps opened for Phish at three Northwestern shows during summer 1993 (8/24, 8/25, and 8/26). On both 8/25 and 8/26 the legendary guitar player boarded the stage led Phish in a rendition of one of his twisted originals, “Nothin' But A Nothin'” (also known as "Nuthin' But A Nuthin'." With Fishman joining in on vacuum, Baby Gramps served up his signature guitar playing, a slapped-together combination of Eugene Chadbourne and Django Reinhardt.
Gramps has spoken fondly of his appearance with Phish, calling them “nice guys” who could “almost” even keep up with his playing!
